This is the 2008 X-Factor runner-up JLS’ first album release, following the success of singles ‘Beat Again’ and ‘Everybody in Love’.
I am not ashamed to admit that I was a fan of the band on the TV show, and voted for them a number of times, but I was expecting them to be changed into a cheesy ballad singing boy band following their appearance on the popular programme.
There are quite a few slow ballad type songs on this album but most are kept modern and up to date, such as ‘One Shot’, which makes it one of the best song on the album.
Track 6 ’Close to You’ is one of my least favourite songs on the CD and Track 13 ‘Tightrope’ is a disappointing end to the album. It is these type of tracks that let the album down as it sounds too much like 90′s pop, not the R’n'B style that I like JLS for. But maybe you have to expect some of that from an X-Factor finalist.
Overall I think the album is a bit of a let down for fans who voted for them, expecting more up tempo songs such as the ones already released. The cheesy lyrics and boring boy-band songs do nothing for JLS, but this album’s good tracks show the bands huge talent and why they have such a big fan base.
